Renovating to Save Space? Think Again. Another Alternative to Renovating Amy Smith, March 17, 2022February 28, 2025 Many people will renovate to save space. The question that we should ask, though, is whether there might be other ways to save it? Why go to the expense of building an extension when there are more affordable ways available to us? What is another alternative to renovating? Having a 1st month free storage solution will provide us with the option to decide whether self-storage is for us as an alternative to renovating our home. It would certainly be more affordable unless we are seeing renovation as an investment rather than a solution to gain space. Why Renovate? Renovating a home can be done for several reasons. It is not something to think about lightly because it is second in terms of the expensive solutions that exist to create space for ourselves and our family. The most expensive would, of course, be moving to another house. The reasons to renovate might include: To create functional space for a growing family. As an investment to increase the value of a home. To increase the efficiency of our home. For a new look or curb appeal. To avoid the stress and expenses of buying a new home. Storage Units If our reason to renovate a property was solely to gain or create extra space, then we should consider the storage unit instead of the renovation option. This will create the extra room that we need without making it a permanent arrangement or putting too much of a dent in our finances. We would not, for instance, need to borrow money to fund the project. Storage units are also a place to store items so that we can renovate a property, so you might need one either way. Anyway, to help you decide on storage units in Silver Spring (or elsewhere), it is good that the first month of storage will often come for free. This allows us to trial the option to see how it can work for us. We can think about our growing family and how some of the items that we are putting into storage can one day become theirs when they set up a home of their own. The security with self-storage units can be as good, if not better, than with many homes. It will not often just be about putting a camera there but regularly monitoring any suspicious activity. If homes in your area are being singled out by burglars, it makes sense to take your precious items away from your property and store them elsewhere where they will be safer and still well protected. You can access them as often as you want. That might be for a special occasion or just to look at. Another Alternative to Renovating IInstead of renovating, we could look to rearrange our objects better so that they take up less space. Also, think about whether we have used all the space in our attic or outbuildings. Are all our drawers and cupboards full when we have objects out that are in the way? The thing that we must weigh up when deciding about an outbuilding is that they can be cold and damp places and not suitable to store certain kinds of items. Whereas, with storage units, they can be climate-controlled and can keep objects at a constant temperature, which they will prefer. Damage such as mold or rust can be caused to them otherwise. We can easily devalue an object by not storing it in the correct environment. It then makes sense only to renovate if we have another reason for doing it other than to create space. There are more cost-effective solutions to gain the space that we need now or in the long term. You can rent a self-storage unit for as long as is required. This can be a local one where you will have full regular access to it.
