Laughter Really is Medicine for the Soul Amy Smith, September 27, 2017December 10, 2022 Laughter is Contagious The old adage, “Laughter is the best medicine.” rings true! Think about the feeling you get when you hear a little one with that deep uncontrollable belly laugh. Everyone around you starts to smile and even begin to laugh as well. Laughing is contagious because it feels so good! One of the BEST ways to bond with a child is through laughter. Bonding Through Laughter My husband and I are foster parents. When children come into our home, they are scared, shocked, and traumatized. From the moment they walk in our door, they are surrounded by unfamiliar faces and voices, a house that doesn’t look or smell like theirs, a bedroom and toys unlike their own. Fear grips them like a vice and guards go up all around them. Bonding can be extremely difficult. With all of the children we have taken care of over the years, the first good genuine laughter within our home seems to lower the guards. Then lower a little more and more with each giggle. The most waisted of all days is one without laughter -EE Cummings About the Book What’s Making Walter C. Laugh Sometimes, you just HAVE to be silly to get into the heart of a child. What’s Making Walter C. Laugh written by Ginny Jordan is an absolutely incredible book for all but we have found it especially helpful in our situation! Each page is full of bright, colorful illustrations that make the child automatically engage in the book even before the first word is read! Throughout the book, the author shares silly ideas of what might be making a little boy, named Walter C., laugh. I promise you won’t go to a page where your little one doesn’t giggle. My daughter couldn’t stop laughing. Is it a goldfish dancing with a banana on the kitchen table? Is it a snowman eating pizza in the bathtub? When I finish the book with her, she always has a bunch of new crazy, silly ideas of what SHE thinks might make Walter C. laugh. At the very end of the book, Ginny added blank pages to allow your child to try what THEY think is making Walter C. laugh. One of the ideas she wanted to draw was “a flower singing a silly song”. Laughter is an instant vacation A Special Moment of Laughter in Our Home We were doing respite care for a three-year-old boy. He was unsure of us at first. I sat him on one side of my lap and my daughter on the other side and we read the book, What’s Making Walter C. Laugh. My daughter started giggling before I even started reading because she knew what was about to happen. Towards the very end of the first silly idea the author gave, my daughter was in full belly laugh and the three-year-old had a smile with a quiet little laugh. By the end of the book, both kids (and myself), were all laughing uncontrollably. It was a precious moment! Darling, I love seeing kids read together. My oldest ‘reads’ to my youngest and they bond so much during story time!
Sounds like a wonderful children’s book. The best medicine is laughter and one of the most precious sounds in the world to me is hearing my grandchildren laugh. Thanks for the chance to win
This sounds like such a wonderful book, such a great story and its so nice that it allows the child to use there own imagination. so cute. @tisonlyme143
I firmly believe it is more of a blessing to US to be foster parents than it is for the child!! It is an honor to get to love these kids! 🙂
What a sweet story you shared and thank you for being a foster parent. This sounds like a really cute book that I’m sure my granddaughter’s would enjoy. We love to laugh and I agree laughter is the best medicine and a great way to get people to lower their guard and open up.
You are so right whether young or older laughter is the best medicine to get you through life and some tough times..This book looks really cute and funny!
