Here are some tips on how to keep organic milk fresh for longer. Chill the Carton Before You Pour. This is a great tip for keeping your milk fresh. The best way to do this is to put it in the fridge for about an hour before you pour it, which will lower the temperature of your milk and help keep it fresher for longer. Avoid storing milk in areas of high humidity. You can also avoid storing milk in areas of high humidity. The bathroom, the kitchen, and the laundry room are all places to avoid storing your organic milk. The basement and attic should also be avoided as well because these areas have higher levels of moisture. Instead, store your organic milk in a cool location near room temperature away from any heat sources or direct light. Store Milk on a Shelf, Not in the Door. When you’re storing milk, the key is to keep it in direct contact with as few surfaces as possible. That means storing your milk on a shelf, not in the door or on a refrigerator shelf that touches another shelf (as shown in the illustration below). The same goes for positioning your bottles: You want to avoid putting them near other items like cans or glass jars. And if you have decorative items hanging from hooks on your refrigerator door, consider moving them elsewhere so they don’t get in contact with the milk. Keep the Cap Closed Tightly. The cap on your milk container is a barrier against bacteria, oxygen, and light. If it’s open too long, these elements can cause the milk to spoil faster than usual. Keep the cap screwed on tightly whenever you’re not pouring out some of the contents. If you’re storing it in an airtight container like Tupperware or a plastic bag with an airtight sealer, then it won’t matter as much if there’s still some room for air inside that container; but if you are using a jug without any sort of protection or storage method at all (like I do at home), then making sure that lid stays covered will help keep oxygen away from your drinkable dairy product. The reason this works so well when keeping food fresh is that oxygen attracts water molecules and they love being together; so when there’s more water present in something like meat or bread products (which already have plenty), those two substances begin breaking down much faster as well—leading us right back into our main topic… Be mindful of temperatures because hot temperatures equal bacterial growth. Don’t leave milk in your car. The temperature of your car can fluctuate from hot to cold, which can have a devastating effect on the quality of your milk. Avoid leaving fresh milk in your vehicle and opt for a cooler or insulated bag if you do need to transport it. Don’t put it on the countertop, as mentioned above, bacteria thrive at room temperature and their growth will be accelerated if they’re given even more warmth. Keep organic milk away from any kitchen countertops or areas where there’s direct sunlight exposure so that its quality is protected as much as possible.
