Yet in the southern part of the state, one of the most unique areas in the entire country lies waiting to be explored… the Everglades. With it’s nearly 1.5 million acres, the Everglades is home to both a fresh water and salt water ecosystem. In addition, it is home to sawgrass marshes, mangrove forest, and hardwood hammocks all dominated by vast wetlands. The Everglades is also home to a wide variety of birds, deer, raccoons, snakes, and of course alligators! There is no better way to explore this natural playground than on an airboat tour! While there is, no doubt, many choices of which airboat company to go out into nature with, Down South Airboats stands out above them all! From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted by all the folks at Down South Airboat Tours. They were waiting for us and had the boat in the water, all ready to go! With much excitement, my husband and I, along with our three children, loaded on the boat with our captain and we were off! From the get-go we were impressed! One of my favorite features is that each of us was given a headset with microphones so that we could talk to each other throughout our adventure. We could hear each other even with the roar of the Airboat engine! They also worked as ear protection from the wind and sound of the boat. This was a great feature as it allowed our very informative captain to point out various plants and animals along the way as well as share some of his vast knowledge of the area and its history. To the delight of our kids, we saw numerous birds, fish, and plenty of gators! With the owners running airboat tours in the Everglades for 6 generations, their roots run deep and their humble pride is evident as they guide their guest on a fun, yet educational experience! On our last leg of the trip, we ran into some rain but our captain quickly stopped and gave us all rain gear to keep us warm and dry! When I lived in Florida I always wanted to do this! Since I was in Central Florida it was a little ways away distance wise but I do hope to get down there again in the near future and go with hubby and my daughter.
