Grounding Your house should be grounded as grounding directs certain electrical faults into the ground instead of into your house. Since an ungrounded house is a threat in terms of electric shocks and electrical fires, the residents and the property are at risk. Note that older homes are more likely to be ungrounded than new constructions. Updated Breaker Box The older the breaker box, the more and more likely it’s not necessarily going to do its job. Getting a new breaker box with electrical labels is another way to have better protection against fires. One purpose of a breaker box is to detect issues with the electricity in the house. For example, if a major appliance in the house malfunctions, the breaker box can detect the electrical issue and shut off power to that appliance before it can do any true damage to the rest of the house. New Outlets Since an old outlet could go on fire or emit sparks, replacing outlets is a smart idea. Don’t forget about outlets in hidden places, such as in the bedroom closets or in the back room of the basement. Plug Covers When you have children or pets in the house, make sure to get plug covers. You don’t want your kids to stick their fingers in the outlets or your pets to get their paws stuck in one. An uncovered outlet can quickly become a deadly hazard. Make sure you choose high-quality plug covers so that the kids and pets cannot simply rip or chew the items out of the sockets.
