Steps to Getting Your Hot Water Back

If you’re like many homeowners throughout the United States, you rely heavily on hot water to do things like clean and bathe. However, when the water stops, for any reason, what are you supposed to do? Below are some suggestions for ways you can try to get your water running hot again, up to and including calling in a professional.

Check the Temperature Setting on Your Water Heater

First, you’ll want to check your hot water’s temperature. When you turn it up all the way and allow it enough time to heat up, is the water coming out steaming-hot? If not, there is a chance there was a power surge in your home, and it caused the water heater to stop working. Your first step should be calling your power company and having your home inspected for damages.

Beyond that, if the water doesn’t stay hot very long, or if it’s constantly fluctuating just how hot it can get, then it’s likely a sign that your water heater is beginning to fail. You might be able to squeeze a bit more time out of it by simply repairing the heating element, but it’s still a good idea to start planning on replacing it.

Drain the Hot Water Heater

If the water is cool, but you still don’t have any hot water, then it’s time to drain your water heater. You can do this by turning the temperature control to its lowest setting and placing a bucket under the drain valve at the bottom of your water heater. Once you’ve turned off the gas line and drained out all of the water, turn on both lines and let it heat up again.

This also works for if you hear strange banging noises and think it’s possible sediment has gotten into your water heater. Draining the water inside should also drain the sediment. However, if the banging persists then it’s likely another sign that your water heater isn’t long for this world.

Check for Leaks

If you’re still not getting hot water, the problem could be a leak. Turn off any outlets or appliances that may have been using hot water and have someone come out to inspect your tank for leaks. This is especially important if the unit was recently installed or if you’ve had any issues with it before. If you notice a leak, have it fixed before using the water heater again.

Allowing a leak to remain could end up costing you a lot of money, as leaks are one of the quickest ways to drive up your utility bills. Since the water is constantly running, even unintentionally, you’re constantly getting charged.

Add Tank Heat

Another possibility is that your water heater simply needs a bit more heat. Turn the temperature up all the way and let the hot water run until it gets as hot as you can stand. You may need to do this a few times before your hot water is back on track, but it should work.
