With airlines tightening their luggage restrictions and the cost of checked bags rising, it is essential to pack light. However, packing light does not mean sacrificing style or comfort. With some strategic planning, you can pack everything you need for your trip without feeling weighed down. One way to lighten your load is by doing laundry on the go. Doing laundry may not be the most glamorous part of travel, but it can help you avoid overpacking and save money on luggage fees. We have some tips and strategies for packing light and doing laundry on the go during your European adventure. Tips for Packing Light Before we dive into strategies for doing laundry on the go, let’s talk about packing light. Here are some tips to help you pack efficiently: Choose the right luggage: The first step to packing light is choosing the right luggage for your needs. Consider the length of your trip, the number of destinations you’ll be visiting, and the types of activities you’ll be doing. A rolling suitcase may be the best option for longer trips or multiple destinations. A backpack or carry-on bag may be better for shorter trips or those walking more. Pack versatile clothing: Pack versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched to maximize your wardrobe options and minimize your packing. Look for items that can be dressed up or down, and consider packing layers that can be added or removed depending on the weather. Limit the number of shoes: Shoes can be bulky and heavy, so limit the number of pairs you pack. Consider packing one pair of comfortable walking shoes, one pair of dressier shoes for evenings out, and a pair of flip-flops or sandals for the beach. Use packing cubes or compression bags: Packing cubes or compression bags can help you save space in your luggage and keep your items organized. Use them to separate your clothes by type or outfit and compress them to fit more items in your bag. Pack travel-sized toiletries: To save weight and space, pack travel-sized toiletries. You can also purchase travel-sized containers and fill them with your favorite products. Consider packing a portable laundry bag: Pack a small, lightweight laundry bag to separate your dirty and clean clothes. This will make it easier to do laundry on the go. Strategies for Doing Laundry on the Go Now that we have covered some tips for packing light, let’s talk about strategies for doing laundry on the go. Here are some things to keep in mind: Research laundromats, laundry services, and dry cleaning services before you go: Before you leave for your trip, research the laundry options in the areas you’ll be visiting. Look for laundromats, same-day laundry services, and dry cleaning services that are conveniently located and affordable. Pack laundry detergent, a clothesline, and stain remover: Pack some laundry detergent, a clothesline, and a stain remover if you need to do laundry in your hotel room or Airbnb. These items take up little space in your luggage but can be a lifesaver if you spill something on your clothes or need to wash something quickly. Use the sink to hand-wash clothes when necessary: If you cannot access laundry services, you can still wash your clothes in the sink. Use a small amount of detergent and warm water, and rinse thoroughly. Take advantage of hotel laundry services: Many hotels offer laundry services for guests. While these services can be expensive, they are a good option if you are in a pinch or have a special event coming up. You can also ask the hotel staff for recommendations on nearby laundromats or wash and fold services. Plan your wardrobe around laundry days: To make the most of your laundry opportunities, plan your wardrobe around laundry days. For example, wear your most wrinkle-resistant clothes when you do laundry so they have time to dry and be ready for the next day. If you have a special event coming up, plan to do laundry the day before so you have clean clothes to wear. Consider using laundry services: In some cases, using a laundry service may be the most convenient and cost-effective option. Many European cities have laundry services that offer wash-and-fold or on-demand dry cleaning services for a reasonable price. These services can be beneficial if you are traveling for an extended period or have many clothes that need cleaning. Final Thoughts Packing light and doing laundry on the go can help you save money, avoid luggage fees, and make your European adventure more enjoyable. Remember to be flexible and open-minded, and don’t be afraid to ask locals or other travelers for recommendations. With these tips and strategies, you can pack light and enjoy all Europe offers. I know this already. I only ever take a carry on no matter how long the stay. Wash my undies in the sink at night and they’re dry by morning. Can hand wash t shirts too. Used a laundromat in Prague once. Easy peasy. Take pants that can handle a lot of wear yet are lightweight. Wear my walking shoes 👟 on the plane and sandles fit easily in the carry on. My jacket has soft arms that can be tied around my waist so it doesn’t take up valise space, etc. Etc.
