Decorating Tips For Spare Bedrooms Amy Smith, November 15, 2022October 30, 2023 Decorating Tips For Spare Bedrooms Photo by Robert Linder on Unsplash As a parent, you’ll be used to not having a great deal of free space in your home, that is until your little ones are all grown up at least. Once your kiddies have left the nest, you’ll find you have a lot more space in your home to work with and what used to be bedrooms teeming with toys and chaos are now sitting quietly empty. So, as an empty nester parent you’ll probably want to turn one of those newly empty spare bedrooms into something else that you can use in day-to-day life, so read on to find out how you can transform your spare rooms into new areas of your home. Know What You’ll Use The Room For When decorating a spare bedroom in your home, it’s incredibly important that you know what you will be using the room for. A spare room has endless possibilities for how it can be used, so having an idea of what you’ll be using the room for will allow you to make better décor choices, which will complement the space better. Common uses for spare bedrooms include using them as: a guest bedroom for visitors and your children coming to visit, a playroom for young children if you still have them in your home, a home office if you work from home, or even a media room/home cinema if you feel so inclined. Obviously, the décor needs for each purpose vary, so what may work well in a bedroom setting, may cause issues if you use the room as a home office. Make Accommodations If Using The Room For Multiple Needs Because of the varying décor needs, each possible room use has, it is important to make accommodations and compromises if you intend to use the room for multiple purposes, for example: using a spare room as a home office during the week and as a guest bedroom at the weekend. Continuing with the example of a home office/guest bedroom combination, you’d have to allow space for work desks, computers, a bed, and possibly even some storage for your guests. So, it will help if you segment the space of the room, creating a small office space on one side of the room and a sleeping space on the other. It would also be important to consider lighting needs, as a general rule in a bedroom you will want darkness, but in an office, you want to keep the space bright to reduce eye strain. This means you’ll need some sort of lighting compromise, such as: main room lighting which can be dulled and intensified, or some blinds like DotcomBlinds’ double blinds, which can provide darkness at light, while still allowing light into the room during the daytime. Implement Décor Which Compliments The Room’s Purpose At this point, you should have a solid idea of your spare room’s purpose and any concessions you’ll need to make if using the room for multiple purposes, which means it’s time to decorate the space in a way that will complement its intended use. This relates to everything from furniture to decorative flourishes. Using a home cinema room as an example, you would want to ensure that the room has: plenty of comfortable seating, a good audio-visual setup, some cinema-style flourishes like movie posters on the walls, and accessories that would compliment the space such as a popcorn machine. However you end up furnishing and decorating the space, it is important that the decoration reinforces the room’s purpose, which will help maximize its use and allow it to be a standout feature in your home.
