Unexpected Blessing From Above – Adoption Story Amy Smith, November 11, 2017September 10, 2023 Unexpected Blessing From Above – Adoption Story Image Source: Freepik Guest Post from another adoptive mother who wishes to remain anonymous. I will never forget the day. I was going about my daily routine busy as usual at my job. I was covered up in mounds of paperwork and had made up my mind I was not going to the floor of the local hospital where I worked to make rounds on this particular day I was going to get caught up on this paperwork. There was this one patient’s paperwork that kept coming up no matter what I did so I felt as though the Lord was telling me I needed to go see this patient. This is where my unexpected blessing started. I was not like so many other mothers that were looking to adopt a child and for that, I feel so guilty in a lot of ways. I had given birth to my son four years prior and nearly died from complications. My husband and I decided that we were not going to have any other children. He was born at 27 weeks gestation but a PERFECT miracle. He only weighed 3lbs 11oz and was ever so tiny. The hospital staff had told us to be prepared to stay in the facility until his due date that was months away but God had other plans for my little miracle baby. We came home just a short 8 days later and he was perfectly healthy. He was not as big as most newborn babies by a long shot but it didn’t take him long to catch up. We were a perfectly happy family of three getting settled into our new home in October of 2002 while living life to the fullest, so we thought. God knew all along what he was doing when he had us build that home and move out of that little mobile home we had been living in the first six years of our marriage. Little did we know, in March 2003 we were going to need 3 bedrooms. So back to the blessing that I was talking about. I went to the patient’s room and found a young lady that had just given birth to a little girl. The mother had not yet held her baby because she knew she did not want to keep the baby. She had kept her pregnancy a secret from her family and friends. She only told the baby’s father. She was scared to death. I encouraged this young lady to allow the nurse to bring the baby to her so she could hold the baby and form a bond with it. She did this and as she held the baby I asked her if I could pray for her. I prayed for her and the baby. I asked that God would show her what to do and that this baby would be protected and have a wonderful, blessed life. I turned the case over to a social worker in the maternity ward that would help her with the next step in her journey. Later that night as I was in my basement doing my devotions, my phone rang. It was the nurse on night duty at the hospital. She explained to me that the young lady wanted to speak with me. I asked her what I could do to help her and she said that she wanted me to adopt her baby. She told me that the Lord told her that I was the perfect person to raise this baby. I told her that I could not make a decision like that on my own, I would have to discuss this with my husband and pray about it myself. I ran up the stairs more like jumped up the stairs shaking like a leaf on a tree. My mind was filled with so many thoughts and emotions I didn’t know what to say, think or do. I mumbled the story of the day to my husband. Due to patient confidentiality, I, of course, had not shared any of it prior. He was like “WHAT!?!?!” We began to pray and ask the Lord what do we do. Early the next morning I woke up and found my husband in the kitchen. I could tell he was a bit anxious. I asked him what he was thinking and he said about the little girl, of course. I asked if he had peace and then the phone rang. It was the patient again. I asked if she was ok and she said I will be if you will tell me that you are going to adopt my baby. I looked at my husband and we both had that look of perfect peace as I told the young lady I would be heading to the hospital in just a little while. I got my son ready for pre-school and headed to work. I went to my director’s office and told her I would not be working that day because some things had occurred and there was a possibility that I might need to take a leave of absence. She looked at me as if to say what is wrong without prying and I explained to her I would let her know more in just a little while. I went up to the third floor to the patient’s room and there I found her and what was about to become my Unexpected Blessing from Above. I talked with both birth parents for a long while and we made the decision to proceed with a private adoption. I went down to my office and called our family attorney. I spoke with the receptionist who said the attorney could not see me until next week and I explained that just wasn’t acceptable and what the situation was. He came to the phone and immediately joined us at the facility to begin the process of the adoption. In the meantime, I called a few friends that had borrowed some of my belongings such as my car seat, my pack-n- play, and a bring home dress. I asked them if they could bring those items over to my home. I called my best friend in the world and enlightened her on the situation. She took control of things at my house while the attorney and myself worked with the family at the hospital. I can’t begin to tell you all the events of this day but I can tell you that God himself lined everything up just perfectly and that afternoon at 5:30 my husband and I took our Unexpected Blessing to her forever home. When we woke up that morning we had nothing for a newborn baby. By that afternoon, my house was prepared with everything I needed to start caring for this precious Angel that God saw fit to give to my family and me. To this day, I can’t begin to thank the birth mother enough for this unexpected blessing. This baby girl is now 14 years old and has brought more joy and laughter to our home than you can imagine. God knew that our little family wasn’t complete until he put the final touches on it. National Adoption Month… This month, come back each day to read a little more about adoption. I will be sharing stories about our experiences and even have some guest writers who have experienced adoption from all different aspects! I hope to not only bring you “stories” but I hope that you can walk away saying that you are far more educated about adoption. Please be respectful in any comments made below. Remember that not every story is the same and there ARE some out there hurting because of adoption. Check out our Holiday Product Guide! Connect with My Four and More on Social Media!
