Dangers of Sun Exposure and How to Protect Yourself
The sun is the main source of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes. It causes sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer.
There are two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. UVA rays can penetrate glass and cause tanning and wrinkling. UVB rays cause sunburns. Both UVA and UVB rays can cause skin cancer.
Types of Skin Cancers Caused by Sun Exposure
Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer. It starts in the basal cells, which are the cells that line the outer surface of the skin.
Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer. It starts in the squamous cells, which are the thin, flat cells that make up most of the skin’s outer layer.
Melanoma is the third most common type of skin cancer. It starts in the melanocytes, which are the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. Melanoma can be deadly if it spreads to other parts of the body.
How to Protect Yourself from Sun Exposure
You can protect yourself from the sun by using sunscreen, wearing a hat, and staying in the shade. Sunscreen should have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Hats should have a brim that is at least 3 inches wide. Shade can be found under an umbrella, a tree, or a beach umbrella.
When you are in the sun, reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, even if it is waterproof. Sunscreen should also be applied to your lips, ears, and nose.
Be sure to drink plenty of water when you are in the sun to help keep your skin hydrated.
If you are going to be in the sun for a long time, wear clothes that protect your skin. Clothes with a tight weave work best. Wearing thin white clothing will not protect you as well from the sun but it is better than bare skin and can also help keep you cool outdoors.
You can also buy special clothing that has built-in UV protection. This clothing is usually labeled with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor). The higher the UPF, the better the protection.
You should also avoid tanning beds and sunlamps. These devices emit UVA rays, which can cause skin cancer.
You can also protect yourself from the sun by using sunglasses. sunglasses should have UV protection.
Now that you know the dangers of sun exposure and how to protect yourself, you can enjoy the outdoors without worry. Just be sure to take the necessary precautions and you’ll be fine.
